Is it possible to enjoy doing laundry? Yes, I think it is, if you look at it in the right way.
First, you have to recognize that doing laundry is endless. As long as you’re alive, and continuing to wear clothes, you’ll need to do laundry. You might as well embrace this. If you set out to do some laundry and you start thinking that you’d rather be doing something else, then yeah, you’ll start to hate laundry. Which is a shame, because now you’ll just constantly hate doing something that you have to do all the time. Why set yourself up for failure? Instead, realize that laundry gotta be done, and figure out how to enjoy it.
As with many things recently, I think the secret to enjoying laundry is to consciously pay attention to what you’re doing. When you’re doing the laundry, just do the laundry. Put clothes into the washer carefully, without rushing. When you find clothes that need some stain treating, spray mindfully. When you measure out the detergent, feel the weight of the bottle in your hand and enjoy the blueness of the liquid. If your laundry detergent isn’t blue, don’t worry about it, though I think you’re suspect, fella.
Keep this in mind throughout the whole process. If your thoughts start drifting off to what else you would rather be doing, or if your mind wanders to other topics, things that happened in the past or things that might happen in the future, try to bring yourself back to what you’re doing right here and now. I’ve found it’s quite peaceful when you do it this way.
Ideally, just do a little laundry at a time. When you see some laundry that needs attention, do it now. Just get 5 minutes worth done. Start a new load, or fold some laundry from the dryer, or bring some dirty laundry downstairs, or bring some clean laundry upstairs. However, don’t feel like you have to do it all now.
