There were 30,000 gun deaths in the US last year. It’s estimated that three years from now, more Americans will die from guns than from car accidents.

I’d like to reduce the number of gun deaths in general. And I’d like to reduce the odds that someone I know will be killed by a gun.

I think a pretty sensible first step is to limit access to the killin’-est weapons we have, namely semi-automatic weapons and ammunition. Right now you can pick these kinds of weapons up at your local Walmart. Here’s a semi-automatic rifle listed on Don’t forget to check out the helpful comment someone left on this gun, which includes the following line:

I love this rifle and would highly recommend it to others, this is also a great rifle to teach a younger child to shoot as it is very quiet and has minimal kick (as most 22′s do).

Nothing we do will completely eliminate gun deaths. But I’d like to at least try to make a dent in the number.

You can use the forms below to contact your elected representatives and encourage them to limit access to these guns. Here’s the simple message I just sent them, if you want to borrow it:

Please promote public safety by limiting access to semi-automatic weapons and ammunition. Thank you.

  1. Semi-automatic weapons such as the one listed on the Walmart site account for less than 4% of all firearm related deaths. You only care because of the recent massacres and because the media has you scared. What about all those people killed by pistols? Like those who died at Virginia Tech. In fact, almost just as many people died there that day from two pistols than Aurora and Newtown combined. Stop succumbing to all the fear-mongering done by the media.

    • Thanks for leaving a comment. I think we should limit access to ALL semi-automatic weapons, including handguns and rifles. It doesn’t feel like I’m “succumbing to media fear-mongering”. That was kind of the point of me posting aggregate statistical data from 2011 rather than looking at the latest crises. Maybe it is unfair of me to link to a semi-automatic rifle on Walmart when it’s true that most gun deaths in America are from semi-automatic handguns.
