Trying something new can seem daunting. The risks and uncertainties loom large.
And when you actually do jump into something new, life feels chaotic. But if you just get started, you’ll figure it out.
If you don’t know how to ride a bike, the best thing to do is just give it a try. Eventually, you figure it out. Same goes for a new school or a new job or any other novel situation in life.
Before having children, I didn’t know how to relate to children. I would decline to hold other peoples’ babies.
You might think this would give me pause about having kids. Well, it did! But I knew I’d figure it out when the time came.
And I did learn. For starters, I learned to hold a baby. Soon, I learned to entertain one. And very quickly, I learned to enjoy entertaining kids of all ages. Now it’s not uncommon to have all the kids at the barbecue chasing me around the yard, playing a made-up game. I will even — gasp — voluntarily hold other peoples’ babies.
So don’t worry: just get going, and you’ll figure it out.
